SWIM
MORE

Move More Swim is here to support islanders of all abilities on their swimming journey. We've got programmes available for pool swimming and open water swimming.

Our Move More Swim programmes are aimed at islanders who need support on their swimming journey. We’ve got programmes available for indoors and outdoors.

It doesn’t matter if you haven’t swum before and are feeling nervous about getting in the water – we’re here to help and support you at the start of your swimming journey.

Our programmes are designed to progress your swimming ability gradually. Our classes are a great way for you to meet new people, and a great way to improve your fitness.

Swimming has many health benefits and is a great form of exercise for your entire body.  Here’s just a few good reasons why you should consider swimming:

  • Swimming is non-impact, non-weightbearing exercise, so it’s great for your joints and mobility – especially for those recovering from an injury
  • Swimming is a great form of cardiovascular exercise. It’s a full body workout inside and out!
  • Swimming lowers the risk of diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes
  • Swimming has many mental health benefits, including helping to lower stress levels, reduce anxiety and depression, besides also helping to improve your sleep pattern.

Move More Indoor Swim Programmes

We have two levels of Move More Swim classes available – one for complete beginners and the other for those wanting to improve their strokes and techniques.

Move More Swim is for:

  • Anyone over the age of 16 years old
  • People who are beginners and need support to get started
  • People who may have swum before but may have lost confidence or not swum for a while and need support to get going again and to improve their swimming technique
  • People with lower physical ability, long-term health conditions and those who would like to try swimming to become more active
  • Anyone looking to make new friendships – our programmes are sociable and great if you enjoy the company of others

Move More Swim – for Beginners

A 8-week programme for nervous adult swimmers or non-swimmers, who are looking to gain confidence in the pool.

Sessions will take place at Les Quennevais Sports Centre swimming pool – in the shallow, warm pool to begin with, where you will be within standing depth. The classes will focus on gaining confidence in the water, along with basic swimming skills (aided and unaided) such as floating, kicking and learning how to breathe.

There will be one session per week, which will take place on either  a Wednesday or Friday (depending which day you pick when booking) at 08:00-08:45, from 19/21 April until 7/9 June 2023 (inclusive).

Move More Swim – for Intermediates

A 8-week programme for people who may have learnt to swim a long time ago and haven’t swum for a while, or for those who may not be fully confident swimming in a pool. It’s also for people who may want to improve their range of swimming strokes, techniques, skills, and fitness.

Sessions will take place in the main pool at Les Quennevais Sports Centre, which is 25m long and 2m deep. People who wish to participate in these classes will need to be confident in the pool out of their depth, and be able to swim from one end of the pool to the other (the length of the pool is 25m).

There will be one session per week, which will take place on either a Tuesday or Wednesday (depending which day you pick when booking) at 09:00-09:45, from 18/19 April until 13/7 June 2023 (inclusive) – Excluding Tuesday 9 May (Liberation Day).

How much does it cost?

Adults: £44 for 8 sessions
Seniors (over 65 years): £36 for 8 sessions
Income Support: Free (evidence of a valid claim required – this needs to be submitted every 6 months).

What do I need to bring?

To get started you will need some comfortable swimwear, a swimming hat and swimming goggles. If you don’t have your own swimming hat, don’t worry as our swimming team will have some spares for you. We also recommend that women tie their hair back, even when wearing a swimming hat, as it makes it easier to put them on.
