Jersey Sport are enabling more islanders to take the plunge into open water swimming this summer!

Wednesday 14 June 2023

With summer officially here, Jersey Sport are encouraging islanders to take the plunge into sea swimming with their Move More Introduction to Open Water Swimming programme for adults.

Two-thirds (67%) of adults in Jersey say they would like to do more sport and physical activity than they currently do. The World Health Organisation’s activity guidelines recommend adults should do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week.

The Move More Introduction to Open Water Swimming programme run by Jersey Sport is being offered to novice open-water swimmers in return for a small fee. The programme has been designed for islanders who can already swim 25-50m in a pool environment and need some support to learn the basics of sea swimming, build upon their pool swimming ability and need education around tides, weather and do’s and don’ts of outdoor open water swimming.

Martine Le Guilcher, Swimming Development Officer at Jersey Sport said, “If you have never swum in the sea before or feel you would like to gain more confidence when open water swimming, we’re here to support you to develop your open water swimming ability. Sea swimming is fun, sociable, relaxing and a great way to boost your mental and physical wellbeing!

Our Open Water Swimming Programme is led by our friendly and qualified Open Water Swimming Coaches with the support of experienced and trained outdoor swimming volunteers. The team will ensure that the swims are inclusive and sociable. The sessions will be mainly held on a Monday morning or Wednesday evening, at Harve Des Pas and Ouaisne Beach and islanders can choose between eight different block bookings, which means there are hopefully sessions to suit all islanders.
